  • 2:2 BSc Hons Computer Science w/ Year in Industry
    • British Computer Society accredited course.
    • Notable Modules: Embedded systems, Cryptography and Security, Mobile and Ubiquitous Computing, Concurrency, Networks and Communications, Graphics and Animation, Objected Orientated Programming, Functional Programming, Database Systems and Operating systems and Architecture.
    • Final year project: Completed in python for the University of Kent’s Mirror Service, we continued a previous project, overcame the challenges that brings and deployed a core set of functionality for groups to build on in the future.

Work Experience

July 2007 – Aug 2008          Hewlett-Packard  Trainee Software Engineer

  • Worked in the Ultrium Engineering team responsible for the development, deployment and maintenance of Ultrium LTO tape drives.
  • Responsible for maintenance and continued development of internal testing software, in C++, for LTO tape drives used in the non-production debug team and production facilities. This included bug-hunting and error reproduction.
  • Responsible for firmware flashing procedure for all HP Virtual tape libraries. Including documentation and deployment, setting up the Linux environment and Quality Assurance.
  • Built hardware prototypes of HP Virtual tape libraries, including fault finding and replacement sourcing. Spec’d, procured and built all HP test host machines for Virtual tape libraries, including documentation and deployment procedures.
  • Received much praise for my work from managers at all levels and was presented with a number of eAwards for my work.

Skills

During my course and work experience I have had the opportunity to practice many new skills and to improve some old ones, such as;

  • Programming – Predominantly Java. Experienced in languages such as C, C++, C#, Python and Perl. Functional programming; Occam-Pi and Haskell.
  • Web – Proficient with HTML, CSS and XML specifications. Experience with JavaScript, PHP and SQL.
  • Software – Adobe Software packages, Microsoft Office, Visual Studio, Subversion and ClearCase.
  • Networking – Install and setup basic and intermediate networks, Wi-Fi and cable. IPv4 and IPv6
  • Operating Systems – Windows; Server 2k3, 2k8, XP, Vista and Windows 7. Linux; Debian, Ubuntu.  Unix; Solaris, openSolaris.
  • Hardware – both personal and industrial settings, Along with related issues, system implementation, maintenance and trouble shooting.
  • Office Work – Working for Hewlett-Packard helped me develop an excellent telephone manner and other Office skills, such as working in a team, interaction in meetings and other inter-personal qualities.

Interests

I have a passion for technology of all sorts, from gadgets to computer systems. Like many of my peers I enjoy online gaming, especially MMORPGs and team based shooters. I have a love of all things Sci-Fi which lead to my interest in technology. I am also interested in expanding my knowledge of embedded systems and computer hardware.
